This group project was designed through input from IBM. The three designers in the group included Alysa Buchanan, Ellis Anderson, and myself. We were tasked with creating a system/device that assisted blind/visually impaired users with a task of our choosing recognized as a pain point through research.
Eventually, our research informed the design of NICO. NICO is a device worn at home for situational use, similar to that of reading glasses. It is paired with a smartphone and/or a smart speaker such as Alexa. These could potentially have a prescription, attach to the side of existing glasses, or function as style wear in the form of a brooch or necklace.
The hardware has a camera where the machine learning system can receive data to build its database and assist with tasks. The ear pieces would supply bone conduction for assistive sound direction.
